This is probably going to cause alot of controversy,
but i've just fully tested my method of installing the latest windows mobile 5 update (from the wm5 upgrade) from hp.
this is the free update to the paid WM5 version v2.01. you can find it on hp's site to download named SP33318.exe from the 27/7/06.
I was able to fully upgrade to WM5 2.01 from the default 2003SE.
Step 1: Download SP33318.exe and open it.
you don't install it onto the device, just so it extracts to X:\iPAQ\SP33318\ .
Step 2: Download a hex editor (free) if you don't already have one.
Open the file in X:\iPAQ\SP33318 with the .nbf extension in your hex editor.
find a function in the hex editor to delete bytes, and delete 2600 bytes from the start of the file.
Save it somewhere with the extension '.nb0'.
Step 3: Download the utility mtty v1.1a or another terminal emulator that allows usb emulation (use google).
Make sure activesync is closed.
Open the terminal emulator and select "\\.\WCEUSBSH001" as the communications port.
Step 4: type in: password BOOTLOADER .. hit enter.
type in: lnb your_filename.nb0 .. (where 'your_filename.nb0' is the path to the file in step 2)
thats it.. it will upload the rom image to your device without doing a checksum with hp's installer.
if step four is too tricky for you, i've made a tool where all you do is select the file and it will send it to your device
